Dogs are often called our best friends for a reason. They provide us with unconditional love, companionship, and support. But what does it take to build a strong bond with your dog?
The dog-human bond is a complex one, but it is based on mutual trust, respect, and love. It takes time and effort to build a strong bond with your dog, but it is worth it in the end.
Here are some tips on how to build a strong bond with your dog:
Spend time together. The best way to bond with your dog is to simply spend time with them. This means going for walks, playing fetch, or just cuddling on the couch. When you are spending time with your dog, focus on them and forget about everything else.
Be consistent. Dogs thrive on routine/structure. Try to feed, walk, and play with your dog at the same time/order each day. This will help them feel safe and secure.
Use positive reinforcement. When your dog behaves well, reward them with praise, treats, or petting. This will help them learn that good behavior leads to positive outcomes.
Direct them when they break commands with physical movement/spatial pressure, and a leash. Dogs thrive from structure and consistency. If we correct them sometimes but not other times, it often leads to more insecurity and greater mistrust in the owner. Which, of course, is the opposite of what we want.
Be patient and understanding. It takes time for dogs to learn and adjust to new situations. Be patient with your dog and don't get discouraged if they make mistakes.
Teach your dog new things. Teaching your dog new tricks or commands is a great way to bond with them and keep them mentally stimulated. It also helps them learn to trust you and follow your lead.
Socialize your dog. Exposing your dog to different people, places, and situations will help them become more confident and well-rounded. This will also make them more likely to bond with you.
Show your dog affection. Dogs crave physical affection. Pet your dog, give them belly rubs, and cuddle with them. This will help them feel loved and secure.
Be your dog's advocate. Always stand up for your dog and protect them from harm. This will show them that you can be trusted and relied on. Do this with your physical actions as opposed to just words so your dog understands. For example, if you have a reactive dog while out on a walk and another off leash dog comes up-pull your dog behind you and step in front of them between them and the oncoming dog-AS you verbally request the owner come gets their dog immediately. Dogs understand actions significantly faster, not as much verbal language.
By following these tips, you can build a strong and lasting bond with your dog.
Here are some additional tips from a dog's perspective:
Be my leader. I need someone to guide me and make decisions for me.
Be fair and consistent. I don't understand why the rules sometimes change.
Be patient. I'm still learning and growing.
Be loving and affectionate. I love to cuddle and be petted.
Play with me! Exercise is important for both of us.
Train me. I enjoy learning new things and it helps me to bond with you.
Take care of me. Feed me, give me water, and take me to the vet when I need it.
When I do something you don’t like, teach me what to do instead.
If you can do these things, I promise to be your best friend for life.
